As LASIK eye surgery gains in popularity in North America the cost of LASIK eye surgery continues to decrease. Of course, the cost of LASIK will vary depending on the provider and the type of vision correction needed. Laser eye surgery is today’s preferred method for getting rid of contacts and glasses. This was not always the case as LASIK eye surgery was once too expensive for many to consider.

The cost of LASIK eye surgery is dependent on many factors, one of them being location. You’ll find the cost of LASIK to be different in Canada than it is in the U.S. and even in the U.S. it varies from state to state. So, other than location what are the factors that determine the cost of LASIK eye surgery?

The standard in vision correction surgery is to quote the price of surgery as the price per eye. So, each LASIK procedure is quoted for just one eye and if you want to have the vision corrected in both your eyes you need to double the quoted price. The biggest factor in the price of LASIK is the type of equipment being used. LASIK clinics pay the laser manufactures each time they use the equipment to perform a procedure and the cost of using each type of laser is different. The price quoted will also be higher for more experienced LASIK surgeons in most cases. Finally, the cost of eye surgery will vary depending on the severity of your vision problems.

Beware the advertisement that quotes prices like $500 per eye for LASIK surgery. While some people may be able to get this price, in the majority of cases the price will be higher, sometimes substantially so. The $500 per eye price is for basic LASIK for someone with minor vision problems. It may not even include a pre screening which is vitally important to guarantee the safety of the LASIK procedure. If you’re looking at having LASIK done with the best technology such as Wavefront you’re looking at a price somewhere between $1000 and $2500 per eye.

That’s still not a bad price to permanently rid yourself of glasses and contact lenses. In the past 2-3 years the price of LASIK finally became more affordable and has stabilized. It also looks as if prices dropped from 2006 to 2007 and that trend appears to be continuing in 2008. If you include all of the financing options now available for LASIK then the cost of LASIK eye surgery has never been cheaper than it is today.
